Wine tasting in Marche and Abruzzo, a unique experience
With over 10,000 wine producers, 50,000 hectares of vineyards (an area larger than Napa Valley having more producers than Bordeaux), Marche and Abruzzo are two emerging regions quickly becoming the new epicentre of Italian wine. Containing a treasure of exciting native varieties, such as Montepulciano D’Abruzzo and Pecorino, the region’s whites and reds are attracting the world’s attention thanks to their favourable pricing in relation to their exquisite quality.
Most of the production happens on the rolling terrain that separates the Appenine mountains from the Adriatic coast. Here the incoming cool mountain air and sea breeze harmoniously merge giving the climate and soil a perfect balance of clay and minerals. Creating wine with flavour profiles that span from sea to sky.
At The Italian on Tour we are delighted to work with small local producers that are pioneers of organic and biodynamic wine production methods. We believe the respect of the land accompanied by the absence of chemicals and additives translates into a genuine product that will excite any palate.
Our winery visits combined with fun and engaging cooking classes make for an unforgettable, full-bodied journey of Italy’s “Otherside”. Always accompanied by a sommelier throughout your vacation, we will be pairing our regional wines with local and traditional dishes often made with ingredients that come from within the walls of the vineyards. This is truly the most genuine and authentic way to experience the best Marche and Abruzzo have to offer. Get ready to tour with us, and delve a little deeper into the heart of Italian wine country.
wine tasting FAQ
What if I am not a food or wine expert?
Our tours are directed at food and wine lovers of all kinds. Our main goal is for you to enjoy every aspect of our tours. You do not have to be an expert in either area. Just come with an empty stomach and have your taste buds ready for the culinary adventure of a lifetime!
What kind of wines will we taste?
From Sangiovese to Cabernet, as well as excellent white wines such as Trebbinao, Pecorino and Passerina, Marche and Abruzzo offer a great variety of wines. On the wine advocate scale all the wines we will taste score over 80 points and we will also taste many vintages and higher scoring wines that reach over 90 points. As always, we have selected the best available in each category.
Our Wine cellar visits and tasting
On our first day together, accompanied by our certified guide and sommelier, we are proud to offer a fun and informative class on how to taste wine. Learning the basics will make our cellar visits and cooking courses more engaging, as well as provide you with the tools to recognize the attributes that make a wine exceptional.
A full-bodied experience from the cellar to Your dinner plate
How many wineries do we visit?
We choose quality over quantity. On average we will visit 3-6 wineries. Each winery though offers an array of products so the total number of wines we will taste will often be between 3 and 5 per winery! And as always all wine tastings are included, allowing you to sip, relax, and completely savour the scenery.
Will we be pairing wine with food and learning about Olive Oil?
We pledge to make you experience a different and multifaceted reality that resembles the quality and uniqueness of our region. For this reason, we do not simply cook or taste wine but we also conduct special food and wine pairings such as with chocolate and locally crafted organic cheeses. We even include a fun class on tasting Olive Oil with a local Master Olive expert!
Can I purchase wine directly at the vineyard and send it home?
Every single producer we will visit allows you to purchase wine directly and at a very favourable price. Unfortunately, we are not a a licensed importer and cannot ship your wine home for you. As far as sending it back home this will all depend on where you are from. As always we are here to assist you and will offer our advice on bringing that must have vintage home.
Who is Your Culinary Leader?
100% Italian, 100% Local
Your guide has been a global cultural ambassador for Marche spanning over 15 years, introducing many visitors to this up and coming but lesser known region of Italy. Passionate about food he is an olive oil and wine sommelier that brings with him an international culinary resume and love for our land. With this personal knowledge and local connections he will give you the all access pass to the local scene ensuring your journey with us will be nothing less than authentically Italian.
You will never be just a number
Our decision to conduct our tours in small groups of 4-8 people is based on our belief that large numbers take away from authentic experiences and each person receives a smaller amount of care and attention during their trip. For this reason you will never feel like just a number with us. Our cooking classes will always focus on you. Our wine tastings will be conducted with somebody at your side and anytime you might have a question there will be somebody there to help you.
Our cooking classes
Each cooking class will focus on using local produce often grown on site. Expert hands will guide you every step of the way. Often a Mamma or a Nonna will drop in to make sure things are done properly and helping you perfect your dish. The main objective of our cooking courses is for you to have a good time and learn how to make traditional dishes in an authentic and relaxed environment. There is more to Italian food than Lasagna and Pizza and we are here to show you!

Our journeys aim to make introduce to the people, the land, and immerse you in the region we call home. That being said we are proud to think that we offer the finest food, wine and experience Italy has to offer this side of the Adriatic!
Every Cellar Visit will Get you in Touch with the people, and not just the product
offering an experience that is nothing short of authentic
About our partners
We partner with world class wine producers that represent the benchmark of wine making in Marche and Abruzzo and are recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of their work. Many of the wineries we visit offer organic and biodynamic wines and grow vines in full respect for the land. Often the owners will be greeting us and showing us around the cellar and the vineyards rather than a hired host as found in other busy regions of Italy. We ONLY work with very small producers to offer a more authentic experience.
Where is our company located?
Our Italian office is located in Ascoli Piceno, a city older than Rome with a rich past to be discovered. Unlike most tour companies, which are completely based abroad, we are locals who are part of the community and offer an authentic experience which is impossible to construct with headquarters in another country.
